First, second or third: scenarios for Germany’s basketball players

The German national basketball team was already assured of a place in the last 16 before its defeat by Slovenia. Now there are several scenarios for how the DBB selection will get to Berlin.

With the 80:88 defeat against European champions Slovenia, the German basketball players have missed out on an early victory in Group B. This Wednesday in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, the decision will be made on the placings – and thus on the duels that will take place from Saturday in the last 16 in Berlin. The Slovenians, the Germans and the French go into the final matchday with three wins each. Bosnia and Herzegovina have two victories so far.

The Bosnians start at 14.30 against Lithuania. Slovenia and France play each other at 5.15pm, and in the evening (8.30pm) Germany finish the day against the still winless Hungary. The Deutsche Presse-Agentur shows the possible scenarios for the team of national coach Gordon Herbert.

The German team will be group winners if…

..they win their own match against Hungary and France defeats Slovenia first. Germany and France would then have four wins each, but Germany would have won the direct comparison.

The German team will finish second in the group if…

..they win their own match against Hungary and Slovenia defeats France first. Germany and Slovenia would then have four wins each, but Slovenia would have won the direct comparison.

…it loses its own match against Hungary and Slovenia beats France beforehand. Germany and France would then each have three wins, but Germany would have won the direct comparison. Even a third win by Bosnia would not change anything in Germany’s second place in this case, because the Germans have won the direct comparison against both teams.

The German team will finish third in the group if…

..they lose their own match against Hungary and Slovenia loses to France beforehand. It wouldn’t matter if Bosnia won their match against Lithuania or not.
