FIFA rejects Overmars appeal

The FIFA appeals committee has rejected former Dutch international Marc Overmars’ request to have his worldwide ban lifted

Frank Neervoort, spokesman for the 50-year-old, told the Dutch daily newspaper Het Parool. “We received a message with two sentences. The first sentence states that the appeal has been rejected, the second sentence states that the costs incurred will be borne by Mr. Overmars,” said Neervoort. It is uncertain whether Overmars will take the matter to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS): “There are high costs involved.”

Overmars had sent inappropriate photos and messages to several female employees in his position as sports director of top Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam, later apologizing for his behaviour

Current position at Royal Antwerp must remain dormant

In November 2023, the former professional was banned from Dutch soccer for one year plus a further year on probation. This was extended by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee at the beginning of January.

Overmars was most recently sporting director at Belgian champions Royal Antwerp, who are coached by former Bayern professional and Wolfsburg coach Mark van Bommel. Overmars is not allowed to exercise this function until November 2024
