Egg attack has consequences

Chris Eubank Jr. had attacked opponent Conor Benn at a press conference.

During the staredown, boxing pro Chris Eubank Jr. slapped an egg into the face of his opponent Conor Benn on the open stage, and now he is being charged. The IBO world champion must pay 100,000 pounds (about 119,000 euros) for his attack, as decided by the British Boxing Board of Control.

The two British middleweights will meet on April 26 at the football stadium of Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, where the incident occurred at the press conference for the duel a good two weeks ago. The result was a brawl.

The reason for the attack is that Benn tested positive for two doping controls in 2022. In 2023, the World Boxing Council (WBC) cleared him because “high egg consumption” was a “plausible explanation” for his findings. The fight was originally scheduled for October 2022, but was postponed due to the doping issue.

Two days after the egg attack, Eubank Jr. had justified his behavior at another press conference. “Did I cross a line?” Asked the pro, “I think a lot of lines were crossed throughout this entire process. He deserves the embarrassment of what happened.“

”If I had the chance, I would do it again,” said Eubank Jr., ‘unfortunately I’m unarmed. I’ve been searched multiple times and couldn’t smuggle anything in.’

The duel continues a family feud. Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Sr. had faced each other in two bitter fights in the early 90s.
