Durant announces Olympic participation

NBA star Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns wants to be part of next year’s Olympic Games in Paris.

The 35-year-old exceptional basketball player has already won Olympic gold three times, most recently leading the US team to triumph in Tokyo. “I’m going to play in the Olympics next year,” Durant announced at the Phoenix Suns’ media day on Monday. In all likelihood, he will not be the only top star competing in Paris next year.

Already a few weeks ago, “The Athletic” had reported that LeBron James was planning to do the same. According to the report, James himself is said to have already approached Stephen Curry, his team-mate Anthony Davis and Durant in this regard. Durant’s official confirmation is now available.

Like most NBA stars, Durant did not play in this summer’s World Cup in the Philippines. The USA had to admit defeat in the semi-finals to the eventual world champions Germany and even finished fourth in the end.

Nevertheless, the USA will again enter the Olympic Games as the absolute top favourite – regardless of the squad. NBA players have been allowed to participate in the Olympics since 1992. Except for 2004, when “Team USA” with LeBron James, Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson only won bronze, the athletes from the United States have won gold every time.
