Djokovic in quarter-finals – Sinner wins young star duel

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has reached the quarter-finals of the grass-court classic at Wimbledon for the 13th time in his career. The 35-year-old Serb prevented a sensation on Centre Court by beating Tim van Rijthoven 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

His Dutch opponent had only made it into the main draw with a wildcard after winning the tournament in “s-Hertogenbosch. After the surprising loss of the second set, Djokovic quickly found his sovereignty again.

The 20-time Grand Slam tournament winner continues to strive towards his seventh Wimbledon title and will now meet Jannik Sinner from South Tyrol in the round of the best eight. The 20-year-old defeated Spanish fifth seed Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3 in the duel of the young stars and has reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time. The 19-year-old clay court specialist Alcaraz had defeated the two German tennis pros Jan-Lennard Struff and Oscar Otte, among others, in the tournament.

In addition, Cameron Norrie from Great Britain and David Goffin from Belgium reached the quarter-finals. Norrie, seeded ninth, beat Tommy Paul of the USA 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. As an unseeded player, Goffin downed American Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
