Despite falling behind at second-division Duisburg: Wolfsburg remain in DFB Cup

VfL Wolfsburg still have the chance to win the women’s DFB Cup for the eighth time in a row – although the team experienced a novelty in a 3-1 defeat at Duisburg.

VfL Wolfsburg have not conceded a single goal in three Bundesliga games – but in the DFB Cup at second-division Duisburg, the favourites from Lower Saxony surprisingly fell behind: After a fatal loss of the ball by national player Lattwein, Ochoa was able to march through the centre and set up Ray. She failed to beat Weiß, but Uveges scored on the follow-up shot to give MSV the lead (20th).

The serial winners of the last few years were largely unimpressed, kept up the pressure – and turned the game around within a few seconds shortly before the break: First, Huth, on a pass from Hendrich, chased the ball humorlessly under the crossbar (43rd), and only a few moments later Oberdorf took advantage of a rebound from MSV goalkeeper Mahmutovic to give Wolfsburg a half-time lead (44th).

The lead was hardly in danger in the second period, Duisburg lacked offensive means and finally also power. Instead, Huth, with a precise low shot into the far corner, made everything clear with an assist from Knaak and scored a brace (85th). The VfL can continue to hope for their eighth cup win in a row. Since 2015, every trophy has gone to Wolfsburg.
