Derby winner Trimmel hopes Hertha stay in the league

Union has also won the third derby against Hertha – the Eisernen enjoyed this feeling to the full on Saturday. But captain Christopher Trimmel also thought about the opponent, whom he wishes to stay in the league.

“This means a lot, this triple,” beamed Trimmel after the game on “Sky”. Earlier, Union had clearly won 4:1 at Hertha. This was already the third derby victory of the current season. “We always talk about the city championship. Even though we have won twice before, we definitely wanted to win again today, for our fans as well. It shows again how consistent we are on the road,” Trimmel continued.

“The victory is highly deserved, maybe a goal too high. I liked the first half very much, it can be higher than 1:0. After the break, we had a bit of a hang-up and were unlucky to get the 1:1. The team then reacted fantastically, didn’t let themselves get rattled and kept their focus. It was important to score the 2:1 right away,” analysed coach Urs Fischer.

In addition to the third derby win, the Eisernen, currently in seventh place, also retain their chance of reaching Europe. “Today it’s just a matter of enjoying it and giving something back to the fans,” said a delighted Timo Baumgartl, whose own goal to equalise in the interim was no longer a big issue as the Köpenickers responded superbly.

Hertha’s class preservation? “A derby makes something of a city “

While things are going well for Union, things look bleak for rivals Hertha. The Old Lady remains in 17th place, the mood is bad, the fans are angry. However, the Eisern camp does not want their rivals to be relegated. “We stay on the ground, because we knew that Hertha has a lot of problems, it’s not an easy situation for them. Nevertheless, we want Hertha to stay in the league. That was a football festival today, that’s what the city needs. I can only speak for myself, a derby like that makes something of a city, I like it a lot,” Trimmel even spoke in favour of the Alte Dame.

Relatively similar is Baumgartl’s view – with one caveat: “We all wish Hertha would stay in the league, derbies like this are the most fun. But I have my fingers crossed for another club, VfB Stuttgart. I want the better team to stay in.” The defensive man played for the Swabians between 2011 and 2019.
