The German team will face Italy, Spain or Canada in the quarter-finals in Malaga
Canada and the Netherlands secured the last tickets for the Davis Cup final tournament on Sunday and, like the German Tennis Association (DTB) selection, can hope for the big one in Malaga in November.
Canada confidently kept the hosts Great Britain at bay in the direct duel in Manchester and secured group victory ahead of Argentina, while the Netherlands secured second place in the Bologna group behind the hosts thanks to the doubles Wesley Koolhof/Botic van de Zandschulp against Italy late on Sunday evening, leaving Brazil and Belgium behind by a wafer-thin margin.
The top two from each of the four groups of four will take part in the final event (November 19-24), which will be played in a knockout system.
Davis Cup: DTB in the final round
Germany had qualified early in Zhuhai, China, without its best singles players Alexander Zverev and Jan-Lennard Struff thanks to clear victories over Slovakia and Chile. The final match was a defeat against the USA on Saturday, which secured the group win.
Spain and Australia will also be represented at the final tournament of the best eight nations on the Costa del Sol in just over two months’ time.
In the quarter-finals, which will be drawn next Thursday, Germany will face a winner from the other three preliminary round groups, i.e. Italy with world number one Jannik Sinner, Spain with Carlos Alcaraz or Canada. Germany has won the Davis Cup three times so far, the last triumph was 31 years ago
