Curious interruption of the game: Leicester easily eliminates Watford

Leicester City has won in the 3rd round of the FA Cup against FC Watford and former coach Claudio Ranieri. However, no goal or move provided another highlight in the 4-1 win.

All of a sudden it was dark at the King Power Stadium. In the 57th minute, as Watford coach Claudio Ranieri was giving final instructions to substitute Dan Gosling, all the floodlights at Leicester City’s stadium suddenly went out. For over five minutes the game was suspended at the Foxes’ gloomy home ground – while the fans, chanting and using their mobile phone torches to provide some light and great pictures, took it with humour.

Not surprisingly, defending champions Leicester had looked like certain winners early on in the light. Tielemans put the Foxes on course after just six minutes with a converted penalty, before Maddison followed up with a fine lob (25th). On the other side, Joao Pedro also showed his technical finesse, scoring the equaliser with a lob (27.). Shortly before the break, Cucho and Ngakia even missed the equaliser (45.+2).

Barnes and Albrighton with the decision

The intensity of the game continued in the second half, when Leicester scored their third goal against a brave Watford and former coach Ranieri, who had led the Foxes to a surprise championship in 2016: Barnes scored after an assist from Lookman (54.). Watford looked beaten in the aftermath, but had another chance through Joao Pedro to tie the game again. But Vestergaard directed the ball against the crossbar (71st) – and the home side added another with stand-in captain Albrighton (Schmeichel was spared, Vardy is injured) and thus ensured the final decision (85th).

Leicester deservedly progress to the next round, while the Hornets suffered their seventh consecutive defeat in a competitive match. It’s now on to the league for both, with the Foxes taking on Everton on Tuesday (9pm) and Watford at Newcastle next Saturday (4pm).
