Challenging opponents loom: BVB not directly in Europa League round of 16

After the Champions League exit is before the play-offs in the Europa League for Borussia Dortmund. Challenging opponents loom there.

What’s next for Borussia Dortmund on the European stage after their Champions League exit? Following the final group match against Besiktas on 7 December  BVB “only” have the chance to fight for the Europa League title.

However, the Westphalians are by no means directly qualified for the round of 16, but first have to get through the play-offs. In the first knockout round of the Europa League, a group runner-up from the current round awaits. Bayer 04 Leverkusen will skip this round as group winners, Eintracht Frankfurt are also on course for group victory before the last matchday.

PSV, Napoli, Lazio threaten

The play-offs, the second legs of which are scheduled for 17 and 24 February, will feature some very demanding opponents. Glasgow Rangers and Real Betis Sevilla have already been confirmed as group runners-up. At the moment, San Sebastian and PSV Eindhoven are fighting for second place in Group B, Napoli and Lazio could also finish second and thus come into question as BVB opponents.
