“Canelo” remains the undisputed champion

The Mexican boxing star wobbles briefly in Las Vegas, but gives his compatriot Jaime Munguia no chance

Mexican boxing star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has underlined his exceptional position in the super middleweight division and successfully defended his four world titles. The 33-year-old IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO champion gave his compatriot Jaime Munguia no chance in Las Vegas, winning unanimously on points. He inflicted Munguia’s first defeat in his 44th professional fight.

At the beginning of the fight, it actually looked as if the challenger could surprise the big favorite. But Alvarez quickly took control and sent Munguia to the floor with an uppercut in the fourth round. “I have a lot of experience. Jaime Munguia is a great fighter. He is strong. He is clever. But I took my time,” said the defending champion.

With his powerful jab, he brought Munguia to the brink of a knockout in the sixth round, but the fight went the full distance. “I have twelve rounds to win and that’s what I did,” said Alvarez, who has 39 of his 61 professional victories to date by knockout, but has been without an early win since 2021.

Munguia acknowledged his opponent’s superiority. “There’s no doubt that I would have beaten anyone else today,” said the 27-year-old.
