Brian Mcdermott Sacked After Seven Straight Losses with the Leeds Rhinos

Most successful Rugby League coach Brian McDermott sacked after seven straight losses

It has been a woeful season so far for Super League champions Leeds Rhinos who currently lie 8th in the table and have just lost 7 straight games in a row. Despite Brian McDermott being the most successful Super League coach in history, the Rhinos have sacked him.

McDermott is the most successful Rugby League coach of all time

It is never a real surprise when a coach gets sacked after a bad season but McDermott would have hoped for better treatment at the club he led to four Grand Finals, two Challenge Cups, a League Leaders Shield and a World Club Challenge. His eight seasons at Leeds were filled with silverware but this recent poor run of form meant that changes were needed.

The Rhinos are flirting with relegation

The Leeds Rhinos are a massive 19 points behind leaders St Helens with only four games left in the regular season. Injuries to key players have been a significant part of the unexpected run of bad performances in a season where they now only have the Challenge Cup to make something of their season with.

As they currently are joint fourth from bottom on points (both Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants are on 15 points) there is a real possibility they will end up in the Qualifiers. This will put the Leeds club in a vulnerable position, with some strong teams seeking promotion this year.

Rhinos look to appoint new coach to bring changes

Just three years ago, McDermott was celebrating winning the domestic treble but the year after was nearly disastrous, as they had to play in the Qualifiers after finishing ninth. They managed to survive that and made a massive turnaround in the 2017 season, where they beat the Castleford Tigers in the Grand Final. McDermott has not been given the chance to turn things around this time though and a new coach will be coming through the door soon.
