Inter Milan’s run of success continues: The 1-0 win in Bologna gave the undisputed Serie A leaders their 13th competitive match win in a row. Ex-Munich player Sommer also boasts some remarkable numbers
It won’t be long before Inter Milan can be congratulated on winning the Scudetto. And the goal of a 100-point season is definitely not utopian. One of the secrets to their success is the feeling of invincibility that surrounds the Nerazzurri. The narrow 1-0 win in Bologna was their 13th victory in a row, and Inter have not conceded a single goal in nine of their last eleven victories.
Which also explains the remarkable figures of keeper Sommer: in 27 Serie A games, he has kept an incredible 17 clean sheets. At Renato Dall’Ara, however, the Swiss was never really challenged in the first 45 minutes. Inter had everything under control and invested heavily in their attacking play. Alexis Sanchez fired the first warning shot after ten minutes, before Bisseck set up Darmian on the right, who missed to the right (15′).
Barella fails to capitalize on Kristiansen’s mistake
Shortly afterwards, it should have been 1-0, but Barella failed to punish a serious mistake by Bologna defender Kristiansen dribbling in front of his own penalty area (21′). Eight minutes before the break, however, it happened: Inter shifted strongly to the left, where Bastoni lifted a soulful cross to the second post – and Bisseck headed in with a superb touch (37). It was the second Serie A goal for the former captain of the German U-21 national team.
Anyone expecting a similar picture after the break was soon proved wrong. Thiago Motta had obviously found clear words to give his team a boost. Just three minutes after the restart, Posch stormed forward, but the former Hoffenheim player fired his powerful right-footed shot just wide left (48′).
Bologna tried hard and threw everything into the game, but lacked creativity and penetration in the final third. And when they did create chances, they ruined them themselves: Zirkzee, whose development Bayern are also observing, only managed to hit Freuler, who was offside to make matters worse, from a promising position (69′).
Sommer dives in a flash
In the 78th minute, the equalizer, which would not have been undeserved, was finally in the air. Zirkzee had a great chance after a fine wobble on the half-left of the penalty area, but Sommer dived with lightning speed to prevent the Dutchman’s eleventh Serie A goal of the season
In the end, it was a rather flattering 1:0 win for Inter, who seem unstoppable. Not even in the top flight? On Wednesday (9 p.m.), the second leg of the round of 16 at Atletico Madrid, who were disgraced in Cadiz on Saturday (0:2), awaits. Bologna, who suffered another setback after six wins in a row, then travel to FC Empoli on Friday (8.45pm).
