In Stuttgart, Italian tennis pro Matteo Berrettini wanted to draw level with one of the top stars on the scene. But a young Brit celebrates his maiden title
Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini (28) missed out on his hoped-for third title at the grass court tournament in Stuttgart. In the final, the favored Italian was beaten 6:3, 6:7 (5:7), 4:6 by Jack Draper despite leading the set. The 22-year-old Briton thus celebrated his first title on the ATP Tour.
Draper became the first British title winner at Weissenhof to secure prize money of 111,785 euros. He had lost his two previous ATP finals in Sofia (2023) and Adelaide (2024).
A brief period of weakness on his own serve cost Draper the first set against Berrettini. He then improved, played more courageously and secured the decisive advantage with the break to 4:3 in the third round.
Draper will thus move into the top 30 in the tennis world rankings for the first time on Monday and also become the British number one for the first time. Berrettini could have equaled Rafael Nadal with his next Stuttgart title after 2019 and 2022. The Spanish tennis star entered his name on the list of winners in 2005, 2007 and 2015.
