At the big boxing night in Berlin Abass Baraou has secured the first belt of his career. Local hero Sophie Alisch celebrates a strong comeback.
Abass Baraou is getting closer and closer to the dream of a world championship fight.
In the Tempodrom in Berlin, he won on fight night from Wasserman Boxing (formerly Sauerland) and Probellum after a technical knockout against Brian Damian Chaves. This means that the super welterweight is now the new continental champion of the International Boxing Organisation (IBO).
Baraou flashes skills
The native of Aalen pressed the pace against the Argentine from the start. He threw one punch after the other and then sent his opponent to the mat in the third round.
His opponent, WBO European cruiserweight champion and former world champion Arthur Abraham, was still gaining ground as the fight progressed. “You can see that he enjoys it,” Kölling commented during the fight.
In the sixth round, the 27-year-old then sent Chaves down again with a liver chop. The referee then ruled a technical knockout, sealing Baraou’s title win.
This brings a possible world championship belt ever closer for him. “He will be in the top five at the world federations. That’s why we’re heading for the World Championships this year, preferably in Berlin,” explained his promoter Kalle Sauerland.
Alisch makes a convincing comeback
Around one and a half years after her last fight Sophie Alisch celebrated a successful comeback. In front of her home crowd she had to deal with Frenchwoman Amel Anouar. “It was a great feeling to be back in the ring”,
The 20-year-old was the more active boxer and landed hit after hit. Her opponent only came into the fight in the fifth round and was unable to close the gap.
So the Berliner was unanimously crowned the winner on points and celebrated her seventh professional victory in the seventh fight. “It was a lot of fun,” she said.
So she should be back in the ring very soon. When asked if she would graduate from high school first or return to boxing, she explained with a smile, “I’d rather be in the ring: “
Berliners celebrate successful debuts
Three debutants from the capital celebrated a successful start to their professional careers. Murat Yildirim won in the lightweight division against the Venezuelan Sandro Hernandez in the third round by technical knockout.
Hamsat Shadalov and Paul Wall, on the other hand, went the full six rounds. Lightweight Shadalov defeated Georgian Achiko Odikadze on points. The super welterweight Wall also celebrated a unanimous victory on points against Beka Murjikneli from Georgia. This must have particularly pleased the Berlin cult rapper Kontra K, because both boxers are his protégés.
Bavarian-born Fedor Michel won the light heavyweight division against Poland’s Michal Ciach in the sixth round with a technical knockout.
In addition, the Norwegian Kai Robin Havna and the Kazakh Alexander Kovrigin celebrated a victory over their opponents.
