Bale and Chiellini make MLS debuts

Gareth Bale made his MLS debut alongside Giorgio Chiellini as a wild card for Los Angeles FC

The 32-year-old Bale came on in the 72nd minute of Los Angeles FC’s away win in Nashville. It was the Welshman’s first competitive appearance in a club competition since April.

“I was itching. As soon as I was on the bench I wanted to get out and help the team, play a few minutes,” Bale said. He had moved to the US in June after nine years at Real Madrid.

In addition to the five-time Champions League winner, Italian veteran Giorgio Chiellini also took to the pitch for L.A. for the first time. Cristian Arango and Jose Cifuentes scored for the Californians, while former Hertha player Hany Mukhtar scored for Nashville.

Gressel not playing yet

New signing Julian Gressel did not yet feature in the Vancouver Whitecaps’ 1-1 Northwest draw with the Portland Timbers. The midfielder had left DC United a few days ago – among other things because of the Rooney signing by the US capitals. Gressel compatriot Florian Jungwirth also did not appear in the Canadian away draw.
