Arsenal FC claimed their second win in a row in the Premier League with a victory at Nottingham Forest. Gabriel Jesus was the match-winner in the second half
Mikel Arteta was aiming for a second win in a row with Arsenal FC after the 5-0 win over Crystal Palace – and made two changes from the weekend’s thumping victory: Havertz moved to the bench, as did Trossard. Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli were allowed to start.
Nuno Espirito Santo made three changes after the 0-0 draw in the FA Cup against Bristol City: Toffolo, Gibbs-White and Williams replaced Nuno Tavares, Yates and Hudson-Odoi. The coach prepared his team for a defensive battle. From the start, Nottingham stood deep and allowed Arsenal the ball. In the final third and near the penalty area, the Tricky Trees successfully tightened up and Arsenal struggled to get near goal and create chances.
Arsenal largely harmless
Gabriel Jesus missed the first good opportunity. The Brazilian steered the ball just over the goal from close range and under pressure (14′). Gabriel Martinelli (23) and Smith Rowe (30) had further chances, Saka’s shot was deflected just wide of goal (44), but Nottingham keeper Turner was rarely called into action.
Nottingham, on the other hand, concentrated almost exclusively on their own defensive work. If there was any forward movement, it was through quick switching actions. Time and again, Wood was the target man in the center of the attack. However, Danilo had the best chance when he shot over the visitors’ goal from distance (42′).
Gabriel Jesus scores from an acute angle
In the first half, Arsenal had 81% possession and still created few chances. The picture changed after the break: Nottingham ventured a little further forward and Arsenal found better and better ways into the home side’s penalty area.
Gabriel Jesus became the key player of the game: first, the Brazilian hit the post from a few meters out (57′). Eight minutes later, he was more successful, scoring from a Zinchenko throw-in to give the Gunners the lead. He beat Turner with a leg kick from an acute angle (65′).
Saka with the 2:0 – Awoniyi makes it exciting once again
First post, then goal, then assist: Gabriel Jesus remained decisive in the game. Saka finished off his cross with a low shot to make it 2:0 (72′). Arsenal had to tremble in the closing stages as Awoniyi scored the equalizer (89′). However, the Gunners survived stoppage time and the score remained 2-1 – Arsenal’s second win in a row
Nottingham visit AFC Bournemouth on Sunday (3pm). Shortly afterwards (5.30pm), Arsenal host Liverpool FC in the top match.
