Association and league extend basketball basic contract long-term

The German Basketball Association (DBB) and the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) have extended their basic contract ahead of schedule until at least 2032. This was announced by both organisations on Sunday evening.

The contract regulates the cooperation between the association and the league, including the secondment of national players. In addition, the BBL has leased the right from the federation to organise, among other things, the German championship and the national cup. “”Now we have planning security for many years and can continue to work together for basketball in Germany,” said DBB President Ingo Weiss.

The new basic agreement starts on 1 July 2022 and is valid for ten years. If the agreement is not terminated by 30 June 2031, it will be extended by another five years until 30 June 2037. The secondment of national players is to be better regulated in future. “There are no ifs and buts… Euroleague is another issue but in the Bundesliga we agree that the players play national team,” Weiss stressed to “MagentaSport”.
“If I want a successful national team, then I can’t say: I’m not putting the players out,” added BBL President Alexander Reil. “We want to further advance basketball in Germany. For that we need international success at club level and we also need success with the national team. “
