Inter had just taken the lead in the table from Napoli, when it was acutely in danger again. But the Milan team turned a 0:2 against the bottom of the table Monza still.
Two weeks ago, Inter had taken the lead in the Serie A title race from SSC Napoli and was keen to hold onto the top spot if possible. But this Saturday evening, their chances of doing so were in jeopardy.
In their home game against AC Monza, the Nerazzurri were expected to dominate throughout and even took an early lead through Lautaro Martinez. However, the VAR showed that the Argentinian had his hand on the ball slightly before the tap-in (26”).
It got even worse: Monza’s Birindelli played a one-two with Dany Mota, who used his heel for it. Then Birindelli appeared alone in front of Josep Martinez and scored into the far corner to give the visitors the lead (32′).
When Baldé cut inside from the left just before half-time and curled the ball beautifully into the top corner (44′), the sensation was in the air: the last team to play was leading 2-0 at the first.
However, Arnautovic reduced the deficit with a header before half-time (45.+1). Inter coach Simone Inzaghi made two changes in defense, bringing Bisseck and Carlos Augusto on for Pavard and de Vrij.
The favorites continued to work their way through the AC penalty area – and were rewarded. Bisseck crossed, Calhanoglu hit the ball beautifully with the instep into the far corner (64′).
After a bitter short appearance by Zielinski (70th in, 73rd out injured at the calf), Milan finally turned the game around. First it looked like a huge save by Turati, but then the referee’s clock vibrated: goal! The Monza keeper had spectacularly fumbled a Lautaro Martinez header, but just over the line.
Thuram’s shot against the post shortly afterwards (84′) could have decided the game, but Inter ultimately came away with three points from an unexpectedly complicated game.
