Alexander Zverev in Miami in the round of 16

The Olympic tennis champion is slowly getting back into the swing of things. In Miami, he only had a few problems at the beginning of his second appearance.

Alexander Zverev has reached the round of 16 at the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami after initial difficulties. The 2021 Olympic tennis champion beat Australian Jordan Thompson 7-5, 6-4 in their third-round match in Florida. Zverev (27) converted his second match point after 1 hour and 27 minutes.

“I’m very happy with my level,” Zverev said after the game. ‘Jordan made it difficult for me at the beginning, but from 1:4 I reached a good level.’

Zverev is trying to get back into form in Florida. Most recently, the Hamburg native suffered bitter defeats in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Acapulco, and was also knocked out at the first hurdle at the Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells.

Zverev always feels very comfortable in Miami. “Miami is one of my favorite cities in the US,” he said before the tournament. “I just love being here.”

Weak start

After the easy opening victory against Britain’s Jacob Fearnley, Zverev initially had a hard time against Thompson. The world number two had to give up his first service game and was trailing. But then the number one seed stepped up, managed two breaks himself and took the first round after 47 minutes.

Zverev now had the game under control. In the second set, he immediately took the Australian’s serve and steered largely unchallenged towards victory.
