Akanji successfully operated on knee

Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji (26) has undergone successful surgery. As BVB announced, the centre-back’s right external meniscus was treated.

BVB coach Marco Rose had recently called his defender Akanji a “difference player” in the defence. However, the latter had already missed the final Champions League group match against Besiktas Istanbul (5:0) before the 1:1 against Bochum at the weekend. A small operation on the knee was necessary, they said.

Now, almost a week later, Dortmund announced a new status. Akanji had undergone “successful surgery on his right knee at the St. Wolfgang Clinic in Bad Griesbach on Monday.”

Strictly speaking, the operation was performed on the outer meniscus by Prof. Michael Strobel. The Westphalians’ goal is still that “Akanji will be able to rejoin team training at the start of the new year”. Until his injury, the Swiss played in all 21 of Dortmund’s competitive matches this season.
