Accident in the Norisring paddock: Toppled radio mast injures man

After Saturday’s DTM race, a serious incident occurred at the Norisring: A falling radio mast caused a serious injury

Exciting races, numerous legends due to the DTM’s 40th anniversary celebrations and, according to official figures, 110,000 spectators. The Norisring weekend was a complete success for the ADAC. But an accident dampened the joy: on Saturday afternoon after the first DTM race, a radio mast fell over in the paddock, seriously injuring one person

Details of his condition are not known, but the person is said to have been hit on the forehead in the eye area. But how did the incident happen?

Even after the crazy Saturday race, which ended shortly after 2:30 p.m., there were capricious weather conditions and storms – and the violent gusts of wind may have been the reason why a radio mast could not withstand the strain and was knocked over.

According to eyewitness reports, it was an antenna mast over ten meters high, which had been erected on top of the officials’ containers – and fell into the space between the officials’ containers and the race management at the beginning of the pit lane.

The so-called mixed zone, where the drivers answer questions from the media after the race, is also located right next to it.

The radio mast is said to have been used for the entire race track radio, including the connection with the sports officials around the Norisring, and weighs not much less than 20 kilograms. A replacement antenna was erected after the incident.

The ADAC reports that the police are currently investigating how the accident could have happened. The injured man is said to still be in hospital
