A back-heel and a goal: Rafael Leao leads Milan to another win

AC Milan are going from strength to strength. On Saturday evening, the Rossoneri won 2:1 in Florence and celebrated their sixth win in a row. It was a long road, however, as the hosts proved to be tough

When experienced referee Fabio Maresca blew his whistle for the last time that evening at the Artemio Franchi, it was sealed. Milan had won their sixth game in a row to move six points clear of Juventus in second place. However, it had taken a lot of work – because Fiorentina demanded everything from coach Stefano Pioli’s team.

Milan were clearly superior in the early stages and created their first goalscoring opportunities through Giroud (8), Rafael Leao (11), Samu Chukwueze (16) and Tomori (17), but then the hosts also made their presence felt. Belotti (27), Ikoné (28) and Belotti again (28) made their mark – and that was by no means the end of it

Three goals in six minutes

The spectators were now treated to a very lively and varied game in which both teams looked to get forward. Giroud missed the last top-class chance to score before the break (44′), but after the change of ends the action was intense …

… Loftus-Cheek gave Milan the lead after Rafael Leao’s chipped pass (47′), Duncan replied immediately with a well-struck 17-meter shot (50′) – and Rafael Leao, who had broken through and outpaced Fiorintina keeper Terracciano, finally made it 2-1 for Milan himself (53′). Three goals in six minutes – events had come thick and fast.

Anyone who thought the second blow would break the morale of the Tuscans was wrong. The hosts continued to play forward and left no stone unturned to come back. Milan, however, ultimately held on to their narrow lead and celebrated victory number six.

A seventh success in a row could follow on Saturday (3pm) next week against Lecce. Florence will then host Atalanta Bergamo, who are also fighting for international honors – but already on Wednesday (9 p.m.) in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia.
