Zverev’s appearance less likely

Whether Alexander Zverev will compete in the Davis Cup remains unclear. His appearance in Malaga is not made more likely by his commitment to another event.

Alexander Zverev will serve again for Germany. However, the world number three has so far only committed to participating in the United Cup, which will be held in Australia over the New Year period. A decision about his participation in the Davis Cup final round in Malaga (November 19 to 24) is still pending.

At the beginning of this year, Zverev used the United Cup as preparation for the Australian Open in Melbourne and won the mixed tournament together with Angelique Kerber and Laura Siegemund. It has not yet been decided who will play at his side in the next edition in Perth and Sydney (December 27 to January 5).
“Playing for your country is of course something very special, and I have the best memories from this year,” Zverev is quoted in the tournament organizers’ announcement: ‘It’s the first week of the year, and we all want to be in Australia and play against the best players in the world, and that’s exactly what the United Cup offers.’

Davis Cup participation is not becoming more likely

The Davis Cup is less suitable for Zverev (27) in his season planning. The traditional team competition, in which Germany will face Canada in the quarter-finals (November 20), would shorten Zverev’s much-needed break before the new season. A commitment does not make it any more likely that he will play in the United Cup.

Team captain Michael Kohlmann has already nominated his selection, but left a place open for Zverev. He recently suffered from pneumonia and was eliminated early from the Masters in Shanghai. According to his plan, he will continue in Vienna, Paris and at the ATP Finals in Turin (November 10 to 17).
