Zverev substitute Yannick Hanfmann did not have to think long about playing for the German team in the Davis Cup group finals in Hamburg.
“My first impulse was of course to come straight away. I had great moments with the team in Rio when we qualified and I’ve known the guys for years,” said the 30-year-old. “I will definitely give it my all, even if it’s from the bench or on the pitch. I’m looking forward to an awesome week in Hamburg.”
Without tennis star Alexander Zverev, who is injured in his foot, the German team will play their first match of the intermediate round against France on Wednesday. However, at 14.00 captain Michael Kohlmann will then probably rely on Oscar Otte and Jan-Lennard Struff instead of Hanfmann in the singles matches. The addition learned of his assignment on Sunday when he was preparing for the ATP Challenger in Szczecin. He was a substitute in the qualification for the group finals in Rio in March 2022.
