Zverev replacement Altmaier surprises before Davis Cup final

In Belgrade, tennis pro Daniel Altmaier wants to get in shape for the Davis Cup. The start is successful.

In preparation for the Davis Cup final round, tennis pro Daniel Altmaier has managed a small surprise. The 26-year-old from Kempen beat the favored Italian Luciano Darderi 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in the first round at the ATP tournament in Belgrade. Thanks to the success against the number eight seed, Altmaier advanced to the round of 16.

In Metz, Davis Cup colleague Jan-Lennard Struff (34) lived up to his role as favorite at the start of the tournament. The seventh-seeded player from the Sauerland region of Germany won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Alexander Shevchenko from Kazakhstan.

Struff leads the German Davis Cup squad. Altmaier is among the selection because top player Alexander Zverev had withdrawn from the final round of the Nations Cup. The two will compete in Malaga in two weeks’ time, along with Yannick Hanfmann and the doubles team of Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz. In the quarter-finals on November 20, the team of national coach Michael Kohlmann will face Canada.
