Alexander Zverev is still feeling the disappointment of missing out on the Grand Slam coronation in Melbourne. Wins like the one in the first match on clay in Buenos Aires are sure to help.
Tennis star Alexander Zverev has won his first match after losing in the Australian Open final. The world number two defeated the Serb Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16 at the clay-court tournament in Buenos Aires. In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Hamburger will face the winner of the Argentinean duel between Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Francisco Cerundolo. Zverev had a bye in the first round.
Zverev: “Maybe not my best match”
“It’s a great atmosphere, I’m having fun here. I’m happy with my victory, maybe not my best match, but it’s good to have my first victory on clay court. I hope I can stay here for a while and play as many matches as possible,” he said after the game in an interview on the court. The winner of the tournament in the Argentinean metropolis receives 250 points in the world rankings.
The clay court tournament should help Zverev to finally celebrate his long-awaited first Grand Slam tournament victory at the French Open in four months. “I want to look ahead to Roland Garros, I want to play on clay as often as I can,” the 2021 Olympic champion said before the start of the tournament. He is also registered for the following clay court tournament in Rio de Janeiro.
