Alexander Zverev has reached the quarter-finals of the tennis tournament in Indian Wells. The German number one won 6:1, 6:3 against the French veteran Gael Monfils.
The Olympic champion’s next opponent is the American Taylor Fritz. After winning the first set outright, Zverev had to break more resistance from the 35-year-old Monfils in the second set. The 24-year-old world number four then created the decisive advantage with the break to 5:3 and ended the match after only 61 minutes.
Zverev has now won 20 of his last 21 matches, the only one in which he was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the US Open.
After the withdrawal of US Open winner Daniil Medvedev, the Hamburg native is now one of the favourites for the title at the event in California’s desert, which is worth a good 8.3 million dollars.
Medvedev fails surprisingly
Top seed Medvedev lost 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 to Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov. Still in the draw is French Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas. The second-ranked Greek defeated Australian Alex de Minaur 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Tsitsipas and Zverev could meet in the semi-finals.
