Madrid – Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev has praised the cooperation with coach Sergi Bruguera.
“We tried it in Miami and it worked well. We get along very well on the court. Hopefully it will be a successful relationship,” said the world number three ahead of his tournament start in Madrid.
Zverev had first worked with the former world-class clay-court player from Spain at the Masters in Miami in March. He said he hoped it would last for a long time. “I’ve been without a real coach for six, seven months now since my father had to take care of other things,” Zverev said on Sunday.
In the past, the 25-year-old had explained that his father could not be there “for health reasons”. The “Bild am Sonntag” had last reported that Zverev’s father would return as coach in Madrid or afterwards at the tournament in Rome.
“I need a coach. I need guidance. I need someone who looks at what’s happening on the tennis court,” Zverev said. “I think Sergi is one of the best guys for that.” Bruguera, who has won the French Open twice in his career, was recommended to him by his former coach David Ferrer, he said.
In Munich, Zverev had already failed in the last 16 and is still waiting for his first tournament win this season. At the Masters Tournament in Madrid, Zverev is the defending champion, seeded second and has a bye in the first round.
