Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev has reached the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament in Vienna with a commanding performance. The 26-year-old from Hamburg prevailed 6:2, 6:4 against the British world No. 18 Cameron Norrie.
In 1:18 hours, Zverev hardly showed a weak phase and thus remains on course for the targeted participation in the ATP Finals in Turin in mid-November. At the end of the year, the eight best players of this season will take part, Zverev is currently ranked seventh in this ranking. In Vienna, he will now face the winner of the match between Russia’s Andrey Rublyov and Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
Low seems to be overcome
Against Norrie, Zverev started strong, directly managed a break and showed a high service rate himself. In the second set, Norrie had treatment above his right knee, but stayed on. At 5:4, Zverev had to fend off two break chances, but was able to celebrate a little later. The small low at the end of the tournaments in Asia, when Zverev was eliminated twice right at the start, seems to be overcome.
Before that, Daniel Altmaier had lost his first round match in Vienna. The 25-year-old from Kempen lost to French veteran Gaël Monfils (37) 4:6, 4:6. At the tournament in Basel, Jan-Lennard Struff was the last remaining German professional to fail in the round of 16. The 33-year-old from Warstein lost clearly against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz 1:6, 4:6.
