Alexander Zverev is out of the ATP tournament in Acapulco/Mexico after the first round. Compatriot Daniel Altmaier celebrates an unexpected career highlight
Alexander Zverev has surprisingly failed to overcome his opening hurdle at the ATP tournament in Acapulco/Mexico. The top-seeded Olympic tennis champion lost his opening German duel with Daniel Altmaier 3:6, 6:3, 3:6.
Altmaier, number 57 in the world rankings, used his first match point after 2:25 hours and will now face Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic.
Zverev beaten by a compatriot for the first time since 2019
For Zverev, it was the first defeat in his third duel on the tour with Altmaier – and the first time he had lost a duel against a German player since losing to Dustin Brown in Stuttgart in 2019.
The ATP hailed Altmaier’s triumph on its official social media channels as the “biggest victory of his career”. It was also the first time Altmaier had ever beaten a top 10 player at a hard court tournament

Zverev, who had previously failed to reach the semi-finals at the ATP tournament in Los Cabos/Mexico, is still waiting for his first title win since last September
Meanwhile, Dominik Koepfer is through to the next round. The 29-year-old defeated French qualifier Terence Atmane 6:4, 4:6, 6:0 to open the tournament and will now face eighth seed Frances Tiafoe from the USA.
