A big name also had to succumb to the 29-year-old Australian in the final
Australian Jordan Thompson has celebrated his first singles title on the ATP Tour at the age of 29. The semi-final conqueror of Olympic champion Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) beat former world number two Casper Ruud from Norway 6:3, 7:6 (7:4) in the final in Los Cabos/Mexico.
“It was an incredible week. I’m almost 30 and lifting a trophy. I never thought I’d be doing this,” said Thompson, who had turned around a 0:6, 0:3 deficit in his quarter-final win against Alex Michelsen from the USA. In the final round, the world number 40 then defeated Zverev in a marathon match lasting almost four hours – now the crowning glory.
“I’ve spent a lot of hours on court this week and I’d like to thank everyone who stayed up last night and all week,” said Thompson.
He had previously reached a final on the ATP Tour twice in eleven professional years – both times at the grass court tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands (2019, 2023).
