Zakaria out for the season – European Championship also in jeopardy

Bad news for Denis Zakaria: The midfielder was injured in training on Wednesday and is out for the rest of the season. The European Championship in the summer is also in danger

Former Gladbach player Denis Zakaria was injured in training at AS Monaco on Wednesday. The midfielder slipped and hurt his thigh. The 27-year-old’s season in France is now over and he will not feature in the final three matchdays for Monaco, who are currently second behind PSG.

“Denis suffered a hamstring injury in his right thigh in training after slipping and doing the splits. He will be out until the end of the season and his European Championship with Switzerland is at risk,” confirmed Monaco coach Adi Hütter at a media conference on Thursday.

Zakaria moved to Juventus Turin in January 2022 after 125 Bundesliga games (eleven goals) for Gladbach. After twelve appearances for the Italians, the Swiss moved to Chelsea FC in early September 2022, where he only played nine games until June 2023. At the start of this season, he moved to AS Monaco in France, where things are going much better for Zakaria. He made 25 appearances in the league, scoring four goals

Will he make it to the European Championship?

So there won’t be any more league appearances this season. An injury at an inopportune time for Zakaria, as the European Championship in Germany is coming up in the summer. The midfielder’s participation in the final tournament is currently questionable. The Swiss will face hosts Germany, Scotland and Hungary in Group A. The first match is against Hungary on June 15 (3 p.m.).

Zakaria’s absence would be bitter for national coach Murat Yakin’s team, as Switzerland are already without a midfielder in Djibril Sow. The former Frankfurt player suffered a broken metatarsal a few weeks ago
