The Youth League play-offs for a place in the last 16 were drawn on Tuesday. Borussia Dortmund travels to Italy.
With BVB facing FC Empoli, only one German team is still in the running. The Westphalians finished second in Group C behind Sporting Lisbon. Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg were all eliminated as the last team in the group.
The runners-up in the preliminary round were now drawn with the winners of the so-called “champions’ path”. In this branch, from a German perspective, was 1. FC Köln, but they were eliminated against KRC Genk.
In the play-offs, the winners of the eight second-round matches of the “Meisterweg” have home rights against the group runners-up of the Champions League “Weg”, so BVB has to play in Italy. Empoli had beaten NK Domzale (Slovenia) and Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) in the championship route.
The play-off draw determined the fixtures for 8 and 9 February, with the winners of those clashes joining the Champions League route group winners in the last 16.
