After an impressive World Cup campaign, Colombian centre-back Yerry Mina has been linked with a long list of top clubs. His powerful displays and well-timed goals caught the attention of several football managers and now it is thought that Jose Mourinho is considering a bid for the bit-part Barcelona man.
Mina frustrated at limited opportunities at Barcelona
Mina’s time at Barcelona has been frustrating for the player who showed everyone what he was capable in Russia this summer. He is a player that deserves to be playing week in, week out and that is something that Mourinho could offer him at United.
United’s weak spot
The centre-back pairings at Manchester United have been a cause for concern for some time now. Mourinho has tried using Smalling and Jones, he also tried Blind and Rojo in the centre of defence at times. Those were all players that he inherited but he has signed Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof to try and solve the problem. United have even been linked with a move to bring back Michael Keane who they probably allowed to leave the club too early. It really has been an area of weakness for a team that has seen some formidable centre-back pairings over the years.
A partnership between Yerry Mina and Eric Bailly could work
So could Yerry Mina be the solution? If Eric Bailly can stay injury-free then he is an outstanding defender, he just needs to find a partnership at United that gives the defence a good balance. Mina is 6 foot 4 and a real presence in both boxes, so he would be a good addition to the United team.
Other players that Mourinho could move for
Everton and Lyon are also interested in the Colombian but you expect that a move to Manchester United would be the player’s preferred choice if he gets that option. Other players that United have been linked with are Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, who has made no secret of his desire to leave Spurs and Harry Maguire, Leicester City’s new England hero.
Maguire has not expressed that he wants to leave Leicester but when the big teams come calling, it can turn players’ heads. Leicester have already seen this with Mahrez and Kante before him, so they probably will not want to keep an unhappy player at the club after the distraction caused by Mahrez last year.
