This was actually to be expected: European champion Gianluigi Donnarumma was awarded the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper on Monday evening.
Donnarumma played a crucial role in Italy winning the European Championship title last summer. In the final against England, the 1.97-metre man even became a penalty hero. In the end, Donnarumma beat Champions League winner Edouard Mendy of Chelsea FC and Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid. Manuel Neuer made it to the five finalists but “only” finished fifth.
The only winner so far of the “Yashin Trophy”, named after former world-class goalkeeper Lev Yashin, which was awarded for only the second time, is Liverpool keeper Alisson. The Brazilian, who had won in 2019, was not even on the shortlist, just like Marc-André ter Stegen (FC Barcelona), who came second at the time. Only Alisson’s compatriot Ederson (Manchester City, 3rd place in 2019) made it to the selection but again failed to win, finishing fourth.
