WTA Finals: First participants fixed

With just five weeks to go before the WTA Finals, the first participants have been confirmed. Aryna Sabalenka is not the only one who can already plan her trip to Cancun.

With just over five weeks to go before the WTA Finals of the eight best tennis players of the year, the first participants have been announced.

World number one and Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) is in the tournament as well as US Open winner Coco Gauff (USA) and Poland’s Iga Swiatek, who won the French Open, among others. Elena Rybakina was also the first player from Kazakhstan to qualify for the singles competition.

The quartet can no longer be ousted from the top eight places in the annual rankings, the WTA announced on Friday. The tournament features the eight most successful singles players and doubles pairs of the season.

This year’s finals will be held from 29 October to 5 November in the Mexican coastal city of Cancun. After the Grand Slam tournaments, the hard court event is the tennis tournament with the highest prize money and points. A German player in the singles will not qualify this year.
