Anthony Gobert passes away after an illness: The Australian was an absolute bird of paradise with a lot of talent, but also knew the dark side of life
Ex Grand Prix driver Anthony Gobert has died at the age of 48. The Australian’s family confirmed the death of the former exceptional talent on Wednesday. A week earlier, brother Aaron announced via social media that the former motorcycle pro was dying.
Anthony Gobert made a name for himself in the Superbike World Championship in the 1990s. He won several races and finished the 1995 WSBK season in fourth place. According to WSBK legend Carl Fogarty, Gobert was the rider with the greatest natural talent.
Due to his success in the production-based championship, Gobert was brought into the 500cc World Championship by Suzuki. The talent of the racer born in Greenacre, Australia, was obvious. But Gobert did not only make headlines from a sporting perspective
A unique career with highlights, but also many setbacks
Gobert lost his place in the Lucky Strike Suzuki team due to a positive drug test. At the time, he consumed marijuana and was released by Suzuki before the end of the season. MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi experienced a few party nights with Gobert and gets wide-eyed when he remembers the time.
Drug and alcohol abuse led Gobert down the wrong path after his active career. He was associated with criminal offenses and is said to have been homeless in the meantime. In recent months, Gobert seemed to have rehabilitated himself.
In a video, Gobert was seen commenting on some scenes from his past. It seemed as if he had found his way back to life. But then he was struck down by a serious illness
Mother Suzanne Gobert shares, “I am heartbroken, my first born beautiful son Anthony passed away late this afternoon. I loved him from the moment he was born and will love him until the day I die.”
“Sometimes he was a challenge, to put it nicely, but he always had a kind heart and cared for everyone. Sadly, he was a victim of addiction, which is deeply rooted in our family. He tried many times to get better, but he couldn’t quite make it. I am so proud of him and thank all the good people who enriched his life,” said the mother of the deceased ex-professional.
