Ana Carrasco celebrates her first win of the season at the second weekend of the Women’s World Championship – World Championship leader Maria Herrera prevails on Sunday
After the turbulent debut of the Women’s World Championship (WorldWCR) in Misano, the second event followed this weekend. The weekend was much more harmonious than the premiere four weeks ago.
Ana Carrasco took her first victory in the new series. But world championship leader Maria Herrera also won a race. Lucy Michel and Lena Kemmer, the two German-speaking participants, collected important points in both races.
In Saturday’s race, the riders in the leading group fought hard duels. World championship leader Maria Herrera and pole setter Ana Carrasco battled for the lead at the start. Carrasco prevailed on the last lap. Herrera was relegated to fourth position. Second place went to Beatriz Neila. Sara Sanchez secured the last place on the podium.
Lucy Michel started the race from eighth on the grid. After the crash on Friday, the German was not at full strength. She fought her way through the race and finished eleventh. However, Michel was very aggressive in an incident on the last corner and received a penalty for bringing Mallory Dobbs down. Race control handed down a 3-second penalty. Michel therefore slipped to 15th position
Lena Kemmer qualified eleventh on the grid in Superpole and finished in 13th position. Due to the penalty for Lucy Michel, she moved up into the top 12 and collected three points for the championship.
Exciting duel between Maria Herrera and Ana Carrasco on Sunday
The course of the race in the second round was different to Saturday. Maria Herrera pulled away slightly at the start and was one second ahead. But Ana Carrasco did not let up and closed the gap again. It came down to a duel between the two Spaniards. Six laps before the end of the race, Carrasco took the lead for the first time, but Herrera countered
There were several position changes in the following laps. Maria Herrera went into the final lap in the lead, but Ana Carrasco was within striking distance. In the hairpin, Carrasco braked her way past, but lost out on the exit. Herrera secured victory in the second race and extended her lead in the world championship. Third place went to Sara Sanchez, who narrowly beat Beatriz Neila
