World tennis star signs former Kerber coach

The world number one from Poland has had a few weak weeks. With the experienced Belgian, things should pick up again.

After a few unexpected defeats, world number one Iga Świątek is getting support from an experienced coach. The Pole is now working with the Belgian Wim Fissette. The 44-year-old had led Angelique Kerber to Wimbledon victory in 2018, and he also coached Grand Slam champions Kim Clijsters, Wiktoria Asarenka, Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka.

“He seems to have a great attitude, vision and vast experience at the highest level of tennis,” Świątek wrote on social media on Thursday. She is currently preparing for the season finale of the top eight players in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 3 to 10, but she is looking beyond that.

Świątek is only just ahead of Aryna Sabalenka in the WTA rankings. After a disappointing summer, in which the five-time Grand Slam winner only managed to win Olympic bronze at her favorite venue in Roland Garros, Świątek parted ways with coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, who had been with her for three years. She recently skipped the tournaments in Beijing and Wuhan “for personal reasons”. Her last triumph was four months ago: at the beginning of June, Świątek won the French Open for the fourth time.
