World selection wins Laver Cup for the first time

The world selection of tennis professionals has won the Laver Cup for the first time. American Frances Tiafoe beat Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 1-6, 7-6 (13-11), 10-8 in a match tie-break in London to provide the decisive points to make it 13-8 for team captain John McEnroe’s side.

Tsitsipas missed four match points in the second set. The European team had won the previous four editions of the team competition.

The Europeans started the final day with an 8:4 lead, but were unable to win any of their matches on Sunday. Among others, Novak Djokovic from Serbia surprisingly lost against Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada 3:6, 6:7 (3:7).

On the last day of the team competition, three points were awarded for each victory. This year’s edition was marked by the farewell of Roger Federer, who ended his career on Friday.
