Berlin – World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty will forego the WTA hard court tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.
The 25-year-old Australian won the Miami Open last year. “Unfortunately, after the Australian Open, my body didn’t recover as I had hoped and I wasn’t able to prepare properly for Indian Wells and Miami. Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from both tournaments,” Barty informed.
Barty had become the first Australian to win the Australian Open in 44 years on 29 January. She had beaten surprise American finalist Danielle Collins in the final of the first Grand Slam tournament of the season. Collins will also miss Indian Wells due to injury.
Barty now hopes to compete in the Billie Jean King Cup on 15-16 April. Australia will face Slovakia at home.
