World champion Niels Giffey will remain with FC Bayern beyond the current season. The former German national basketball player has extended his expiring contract with the German champions by two years until 2027, the Munich-based club announced on Tuesday. Giffey joined the EuroLeague team in November 2022 from Spanish first division club UCAM Murcia.
“Niels is an integral and important part of our team with his quality and experience,” said sports director Dragan Tarlac. Coach Gordon Herbert has said on several occasions that Giffey is “a great player and an even greater teammate.” “There is no better way to describe Niels and his value to our group.”
The small forward is currently in his third season with Bayern, and the 33-year-old has won the league championship once and the cup twice with the club. With a shooting percentage of 60.5, the Berlin-born player is currently the most accurate three-point shooter in the EuroLeague.

“If the core of the team stays together, I firmly believe that we will continue to develop year after year and be able to set our sights high in the future,” said Giffey, who retired from the national team at the end of October after 118 international appearances, winning bronze at the 2022 European Championships and gold at the 2023 World Championships.
Giffey grew up at Alba Berlin, then transferred to the University of Connecticut and won the US college title twice. After returning to Alba, the veteran came back to the Bundesliga via Zalgiris Kaunas/Lithuania and Murcia.
