With Piszczek, without Bender: New BVB coaching team in place

Borussia Dortmund are not only starting the 2024/25 season with a new head coach, but also with a new coaching team. Lukasz Piszczek, an old acquaintance, is returning

Borussia Dortmund’s coaching team for the upcoming season is in place – with new appointments in all positions. Nuri Sahin, who will officially take over as the new head coach on July 1, will be joined by assistant coaches Joao Tralhao, Ertugrul Arslan and Lukasz Piszczek, while Sven Bender and Sebastian Geppert will relinquish their posts.

Sahin had already worked with 43-year-old Tralhao and 44-year-old Arslan at Turkish first division club Antalyaspor before returning to BVB as Edin Terzic’s assistant coach. His former teammate Lukasz Piszczek, who left BVB in July 2021, was most recently active as a player-coach at LKS Goczalkowice in his home country of Poland.

“With Joao, Ertugrul and Lukasz, we’ve managed to put together a trio that brings a lot of skills and good ideas to the table and will work well with Nuri,” said Sporting Director Lars Ricken. “We are convinced that their different strengths will help us to play a successful season. “

Sahin: “I would have loved to continue working with Sven “

Bender, who returned to BVB with Sahin in the winter, is no longer available “due to his private circumstances and his personal coaching development”, according to BVB. Geppert, who has held various positions at Borussia since 2013, has also stepped down.

“I would like to thank Sven and Sebastian for our collaboration,” Sahin was quoted as saying by BVB. “Now I’m looking forward to the new team and the daily exchange with three professionals who I value enormously in terms of people and content. I’ve already worked with Joao and Ertugrul at Antalyaspor. And Lukasz was my first choice after it became clear that Sven would unfortunately be leaving BVB for the new season. I have a special bond with him, I would have loved to continue working with Sven.”

At 35, Sahin will be the youngest member of the BVB coaching team, while Piszczek is 39. “We quickly built up a great relationship of trust during our talks,” said sporting director Sebastian Kehl. “In this constellation, our coaching team around Nuri is very well positioned. The three of them will help us achieve our goals thanks to their different levels of experience in different areas. “
