With Gauff and Fritz: US team wins United Cup

The USA start as the big favorite in the United Cup. In the final, Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz live up to this role. The result also points the way for the first Grand Slam tournament.

The American tennis team has won the United Cup for the second time, replacing Germany as the title holder. The US team won both singles in the final against Poland and was therefore unbeatable. The USA had already won the first edition two years ago.

Coco Gauff beat world number two Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4 in Sydney to kick off the final. Taylor Fritz then defeated Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) in a hard-fought game that lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes.

Germany failed in the quarterfinals

Last year, the German team around Alexander Zverev won the United Cup in the final against Poland. This year, the German team failed in the quarterfinals against Kazakhstan, with Alexander Zverev having to sit out the game due to a biceps injury.

For many tennis pros, the United Cup is the start of the new season and at the same time an important preparation for the Australian Open, which begins in a week’s time.
