The best female tennis players in the world will continue to play in Berlin in 2025. For the last time?
German tennis fans can also look forward to a WTA tournament in Berlin next year. This was confirmed by the previous tournament director Edwin Weindorfer after American Jessica Pegula’s victory in the final.
“The tournament will stay in Berlin. I don’t want to comment on how long this will last,” said Weindorfer. Recently, there have been increasing reports that the future of the grass court tournament is unclear due to a lack of financial support from the Senate.
However, the tournament needs a new organizer. Weindorfer and his e-motion group are pulling out. “For personal reasons, I have decided not to extend the contract after five years. It is up to Wimbledon to decide who will organize the tournament in the future. Wimbledon is the license holder of this tournament,” explained the Austrian.
It is therefore also uncertain whether former Fed Cup boss Barbara Ritter will remain tournament director of the Wimbledon preparation tournament. “I would like to. But the tournament director will be decided by the organizer,” the 51-year-old clarified.
