On Tuesday, FIFA published its figures for the 2024 winter transfer window. While the Bundesliga invested heavily compared to the previous year, the Premier League held back noticeably. There was even a new record in women’s soccer
On Tuesday, FIFA published its transfer report for the winter transfer period – confirming the trend from last January: While there were 4728 transfers in men’s and women’s soccer in the winter of 2023, this time there were 5073 transfers, setting a new record.
A total of €1.36 billion was invested in men’s soccer – the second-highest figure ever achieved in a winter transfer period. Remarkably, spending by English clubs in January fell by almost 80% compared to their record spending in January 2023. The opposite trend was observed in the Bundesliga, which increased its spending by almost 80%.
Sacha Boey, who moved from Galatasaray Istanbul to FC Bayern for €30 million, and Eljif Elmas, who joined RB Leipzig from Napoli for €23 million, are just two examples of expensive winter transfers in the German top flight. A total of 76 players left the Bundesliga in the winter (€17.36 million) and 104 new players joined (€140.9 million).
French clubs invest heavily – record figure for women
French clubs led the way in terms of spending on international transfers in January 2024 with a total of €270.9 million. PSG alone invested around 40 million euros for Gabriel Moscardo (Corinthians) and Lucas Beraldo (Sao Paulo). The big “winners” of the winter were Brazilian clubs, who earned €234.6 million, more than twice as much as in January 2023 (€90.9 million).
Spending in women’s soccer reached a record level: a total of €1.95 million – more than 2.5 times the amount spent in January 2023 – was invested in transfers. In Germany, 25 players were added (+38.9%) and ten were lost (+100%).
