Wimbledon 2018 dates
This year’s Wimbledon began on July 2 and will culminate with the men’s final on July 15, the same day two teams will meet in the FIFA World Cup final in Russia. Traditionally, Sunday (July 8) will be an off day for everyone involved in tennis’ main event.

Wimbledon results 2018
Men – Top half
The top seed in the men’s draw is defending champion and 8-time winner Roger Federer. He cruised past Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in Round 1.
Borna Coric, the player who beat Federer in the grass court final in Halle, was the 16th seed and in Federer’s section of the draw, but he lost in the first round to Russian up-and-comer Daniil Medvedev.
Sam Querrey (11), who has reached the quarter-finals and semi-finals in recent years defeated Australia’s Jordan Thompson to open the tournament.
Two former finalists Marin Cilic (3) and Milos Raonic (13) are on Federer’s side of the draw and should meet in the fourth round if all goes according to plan. Neither of them was challenged in Round 1.
John Isner (9) is there as well and so was Grigor Dimitrov (6). We say was because the Bulgarian lost to unseeded Stan Wawrinka in four sets.
Men – Bottom half
Second-seeded Rafael Nadal spearheads the bottom part of the draw. He too had no problems in Round 1, defeating Dudi Sela 3-0. The main challenger in his section is Argentina’s Diego Schwartzmann (14).
Juan Martin Del Potro (5) and David Goffin (10) are Nadal’s potential quarter-final opponents. Both of them got through their Round 1 matchups with relative ease.
Further up the bottom half of the draw we have the controversial Nick Kyrgios (15) and Alexander Zverev (4), both young guys with specific characters. Kyrgios had to overcome three tie-breaks in order to get past Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin, while Zverev made easy work of Australia’s James Duckworth.
Novak Djokovic is continuing his comeback story and is seeded No.12. Dominic Thiem (7) was supposed to be the main obstacle in his section, but the Austrian was forced to retire in the third set against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis. Following Andy Murray’s withdrawal, Great Britain’s hopes lie in the hands of 21st seeded Kyle Edmund. He and Djokovic are on a third round collision course.
Women – Top half
The top half of the women’s section is led by French Open champion and No.1 seed Simona Halep. Japan’s Kurumi Nara wasn’t a challenge for the Romanian in Round 1. Belgium’s Elise Mertens (15) and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko (12) are two players who will try to stop Halep from reaching the semi-finals. Neither of them had problems in the first round. Maria Sharapova did. She was knocked out by fellow Russian qualifier Vitalia Diatchenko. There was another big surprise in Halep’s side of the draw as Czech No.8 seed Petra Kvitova lost to Aliaksandra Sasnovich from Belarus.
Garbine Muguruza (3) won Wimbledon last year and will go for a repeat in 2018. Estonia’s 22-year-old Anett Kontaveit (28), Australia’s 22-year-old Ashleigh Barty (17), Russia’s 21-year-old Daria Kasatkina (14) and former Canada tennis prodigy Eugenie Bouchard are all in Muguruza’s section of the draw and got past their first round matches. Another top 10 seed went down when unseeded Swiss Belinda Bencic eliminated 6th seeded Caroline Garcia. Angelique Kerber (11) and Naomi Osaka (18) had no such issues.
Women – Bottom half
Serena Williams was gifted a No.25 seed out of respect for everything she has achieved over the years in a classy move by the Wimbledon organizers. Elena Svitolina (5) was he top seed in her section, but she was also eliminated in the first round by Tatjana Maria from Germany. Fellow American Madison Keys (10) is also there. Second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki defeated U.S.A.’s Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets. Meanwhile, another American Coco Vandeweghe was eliminated by Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic in three sets.
While many upcoming stars are in the top part of the draw, most of the old guard is in the bottom half. Other than Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, we also have Agnieszka Radwanska, Victoria Azarenka, Venus Williams (9) and Andrea Petkovic, all of whom got past their first round matches. Sloane Stephens (4) was the fourth top 10 seed to exit Wimbledon 2018 early, losing convincingly to Croatia’s Donna Vekic in two sets.

Wimbledon 2018 prize money breakdown
The prize money for this year’s Wimbledon has increased for a 7th consecutive year and totals €38.6 million. No other tennis tournament gives out such a large purse. Winners of both men’s singles and women’s singles will receive €2.55 million.

Wimbledon order of play today July 4th
Roger Federer is in action today against Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko. In other interesting matches in the men’s section, we have Kevin Anderson taking on Andreas Seppi and Phillip Kohlschreiber taking on Gulles Muller. Milos Raonic, Sam Querrey , Stan Wawrinka, John Isner and Marin Cilic are all taking the court today as well.
On the women’s side of things, Victoria Azarenka will try to knock off 8th seeded Karolina Pliskova. Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Madison Keys and Caroline Woznacki are all scheduled to play against weaker opponents and shouldn’t have trouble progressing to the third round.
