Williams’ doubles partner: “She’s such a legend”

Ons Jabeur could never have dreamed of a surprise doubles appearance with tennis superstar Serena Williams on her comeback.

“I’m still overjoyed with the news,” said the world number four from Tunisia at the grass court tournament in Berlin. “I’m really happy that she chose me. Hopefully we’ll make a good team.”

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam tournament winner, had announced on Tuesday she would return to the WTA Tour at the grass-court classic at Wimbledon (June 27-July 10) after a year’s break in singles. Before that, the long-time world number one will compete in doubles with Jabeur at the WTA tournament in Eastbourne next week as she gears up for Wimbledon.

“She’s such a legend, I’ve always loved Serena, how she plays, how she is off the court,” said Jabeur, 27. “I can’t wait to play alongside her. I’m trying not to make any mistakes.” She herself is top seed at the Berlin tournament in preparation for Wimbledon and had reached the last 16 on Tuesday.

With another Grand Slam title, Serena Williams would set Australian Margaret Court’s record. Williams has won Wimbledon seven times so far.
