Why Nagelsmann uses the NFL, DEL and basketball

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is always on the lookout for new ideas and training content. But his colleagues in the industry tend to be tight-lipped, which is why the 34-year-old veers off into other sports and industries.

Julian Nagelsmann is known for extremely challenging his players in training, overtaxing is even part of his strategy. This is supposed to help them make the right decisions under pressure. He also wants to prevent boredom, which is why the 34-year-old always tries to surprise with new content.

But what reservoir can a coach draw from? As is well known, his first “teacher” was Thomas Tuchel. When the dream of his own football career was shattered early on due to persistent injuries, Nagelsmann slipped into the profession rather by chance. “I wanted to be a footballer and not a coach,” he told Felix and Toni Kroos in the podcast “Einfach mal Luppen”.

It all started with analysing opponents for his then boss Tuchel at FC Augsburg in the second team. “He was revolutionary and didn’t do everything the way it was standard,” Nagelsmann looks back on his early days. “You immediately took something away from that. The exchange about the opponents was interesting for me. There I clearly learned more than I gave input.” Tuchel, he says, encouraged him to continue on this path. So far, it is going steeply upwards.

Nagelsmann keeps in touch with Tuchel and Guardiola

The contact with the Chelsea coach still exists today. “We write every now and then, but it’s not a lively contact. We exchange ideas about players and games every now and then if something catches our eye.”

In addition, Nagelsmann also keeps in touch with Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola, which he says is quite interesting “because he has a very special approach”. However, Nagelsmann explains that it is difficult to find good advisors in football, which is why he also looks around in other areas.

Silent industry – Nagelsmann looks outside the box

“It’s not always easy in football to find someone who a) wants to reveal things, b) with whom you can take away a lot, c) it’s also often the case that a lot of people want to consume themselves, want to have information themselves, and of course the exchange is not quite so easy.”

So Nagelsmann, too, will probably not inform his colleague about all his training contents and ideas. He simply helps himself by thinking outside the box and reveals: “I have a lively exchange with an ex-basketball national coach, I have an exchange with a current ice hockey coach from the DEL. I recently had an exchange with NFL coach Andy Reid. “
